ABORTION

Abortion. What does it mean to you? Maybe you’re like I was at one time; thinking that abortion is nothing more than removing some tissue from a women’s body. Or maybe your thoughts are that abortion is a matter that should be left up to the mother, after all it is her body. Or should we keep abortion legal so we can give the right for rape victims to rid of an unwanted baby?

These same ideas and thoughts were the way I believed. Until one dreadful day I walked into an abortion clinic along with a woman who was carrying our child. For many selfish reasons we thought this would be the best plan of action. (After all, I had rationalized the situation with all of the above beliefs).  But on that fateful day, there were three of us who entered the abortion clinic and only two of us walked out. But why was I feeling so empty? Why was there such a dark empty void in my life, a void that persisted day in day out? Why was I constantly thinking about what our child would  have looked like? These thoughts haunted me for some time. The emptiness, the dark void and the guilt persisted. Until one day I was offered a plan that would not only lift this oppression off of me but would also grant me everlasting life with our Creator. That plan was to accept Jesus into my heart as I asked for forgiveness of all of my wrong doing. And now I have the assurance of not only reuniting with my Lord and Savior, but with my little baby as well.

So then, what about my initial response concerning abortion? Are these pregnancies merely tissue matter or are they actually human life? Human beings are unique from all other beings in that they have 46 human chromosomes in every cell. After a complex process has occurred within a fertilized egg, some 30 hours after insemination, the first cell division occurs. When this process of insemination and fertilization is complete, a new human being exists, not just a glob of tissue and well before the baby’s mother would realize she was carrying a baby. So yes, these babies are human lives.

What about my other erroneous belief?  Is abortion a matter that should be left up to the mother since it is her baby? * A women’s appendix, obviously a part of her body, can be removed for sufficient reason. The cells of the appendix, however, carry the identical genetic code that is present in every other cell in the mother’s body. They are, for this reason, undeniably part of her body.

The embryonic human being within the uterus of the baby’s mother cannot, by any stretch of the imagination, be considered part of her body. This new living being has a genetic code that is totally different from the cells of the mother’s body. He or she is, in truth, a completely separate growing human being and can never be considered part of the mother’s body.

Does she have a right to her own body? Yes, but this is not part of her own body. It is another person’s body.

And finally, what of rape victims who become pregnant? Should we allow abortion at least for this reason? Pregnancy from rape is very rare. And if  a woman were to become pregnant, would not an abortion be another act of violence? If a pregnant woman was to seek comfort from the traumatic incidence of rape by having an abortion, she may suffer more mental anguish from taking the life of the unborn child than carrying the baby to full term.

If you are pregnant and at the crossroads of making a decision of having an abortion, please think clearly and wisely. The decision you make will be a decision that effects you throughout life; either adversely or joyfully. It definitely will effect your baby’s life.
